American Idol: Why It’s Worth Another Look

American Idol: Why It’s Worth Another Look

It's been a number of years before we had anything remotely kind to say about American Idol, and when we got a full screener of this season's premiere, we definitely rolled our eyes. It seemed like a sign of desperation because the show usually just sends critics teasers for each season, not full episodes. So out of sheer curiosity (and boredom during that off week during the holidays), we decided to check it out. And, well, it was surprisingly decent. We'd go so far as to even say watchable, almost to the point of enjoyable. And if the premiere is any indication of the direction the show is taking this year, maybe we'll grouch less about having to sit through yet another competitive reality singing show. This is not to say that it's blow-your-mind DVR-worthy but it is definitely leaps and bounds above the last few Simon-less seasons. So why the dramatic improvement? Here's our take on the big changes:

American Idol: Judging the New Judges

American Idol: Judging the New Judges

We've only had one outing with the new judging panel on American Idol, but we can already see just how this season is going to pan out with the likes of Keith Urban, Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj joining Randy Jackson. And frankly, we're not all that impressed, though we never imagined a big fight could erupt over who knows more about Mean Girls. Here are our initial thoughts:

Most Ridiculous Things Steven Tyler Said on Idol This Week

Most Ridiculous Things Steven Tyler Said on Idol This Week

After only four episodes of American Idol this season, Steven Tyler has definitely turned out to be a... unique addition to the judging panel. Not only does he hit on girls who are half his age (or even younger), he also spouts some of the most inane babble I've ever heard on this show, or on television in general -- and I watch a lot of shows that make no sense at all. Hell, the women on The Bad Girls Club follow a more logical stream in their rantings. Even Camille Grammer's convoluted logic makes more sense. Here's a rundown of the things Steven said this week that still have me scratching my head:

Reality TV Trends That American Idol Should Emulate

Reality TV Trends That American Idol Should Emulate

Producers keep announcing changes to the format of American Idol, presumably in a desperate attempt to keep us interested in that show now that Simon is gone. The latest news is that they'll be filming the contestants living together in a house, even though they tried in some of the earlier seasons and it was really boring. Presumably, they've got a plan to Big Brother/Real World this up - perhaps with a Vegas trip -- because otherwise this isn't all that exciting. But perhaps there are some other recent reality TV trends that Idol could steal some ideas from instead. Sure these may seem extreme, but at least they would give Seacrest a challenge and would likely keep us from banging out heads against the wall during the padded intro packages.

People Who Could Fill Simon Cowell’s Chair on American Idol

People Who Could Fill Simon Cowell’s Chair on American Idol

Well, he's been talking about it for years, but it's finally happening... Simon Cowell is leaving American Idol, which means that after the current season (which begins tonight), not one, but two of the original judges will be gone. Paula Abdul's seat has been filled by Ellen DeGeneres (how she'll fare remains to be seen), but the show has always revolved around Simon's cutting remarks and candid criticisms, so replacing him will be a much larger task. We've come up with some people who might be up for the job, or at least could be entertaining to watch while we wait for The X Factor to premiere.

The Pros and Cons of Ellen as American Idol‘s Newest Judge

The Pros and Cons of Ellen as American Idol‘s Newest Judge

While we've been hearing for months about all of the very special guest judges who are taking on the audition rounds (from Neil Patrick Harris to Katy Perry and everyone in between), the looming question has been if anyone would take over the fourth seat vacated by Paula Abdul on a permanent basis. Well, we now have an answer: Yes, Ellen DeGeneres. Hiring the popular daytime talk show host and comedian instead of any of the music industy vets we had hoped for could be a stroke of genius -- or it could spell disaster for TV's top-rated program. We've weighed the pros and cons of Idol's newest judge.

Jobs Paula Abdul Should Have Post-Idol

Jobs Paula Abdul Should Have Post-Idol

Now that Paula quit or was forced out of Idol she's going to be looking for some new source of income. Since her short-lived reality series Hey Paula wasn't exactly riveting, putting her on a candid reality show doesn't seem like a good idea. Instead we've found some current competitive reality shows (and one drama) that may want to consider welcoming Paula with open arms.

American Idol: Why Kris Will Win

American Idol: Why Kris Will Win

I'm an Adam Lambert fan. I'm not even going to try and pretend I'm not. I love his voice, his style and think he just seems like a cool person. That said, I'm also hugely into musical theater and like my pop stars to be overly flamboyant. I was raised in a household with a lot of Queen and David Bowie. But even though Adam made it further than I could have hoped, I just think that it won't be enough to pull him through to take the title of American Idol (which really means nothing anyway, but that's a whole 'nother story). If it had been the predicted Lambert/Gokey showdown, I think Adam might have had a chance, but now that wild card Kris Allen is in the mix, I think that Kris has an excellent chance of going home with the title.

American Idol Q&A: Danny Gokey Gets Gone

American Idol Q&A: Danny Gokey Gets Gone

It seemed a given that Danny Gokey was going to torture us with his boring stylings, ever-present glasses and heart gestures right up until the bitter end of American Idol, but the American public didn't agree and sent him packing last week. During a press conference call, Gokey talked incessantly about wanting to design a line of eyeglasses, or be a glasses model, and also about his charity and being inspiring and all that crap. That was all really boring though. Here are the slightly more interesting tidbits from the call.

How to Condense American Idol… A Lot

How to Condense American Idol… A Lot

So it seems that the producers didn't listen to our plea/suggestions a few weeks ago on how to rein this show into its allotted time, and now they've had a few weeks of egregious overruns. This is truly unacceptable and unnecessary. We've got a solid plan to condense this entire series down. Way down. We're talking 15-minute performance nights and five-minute results nights. They could air some of their other actual shows in the remaining time, or just fill it with Ford/Coke commercials like they are wont to do anyway. That way, there'd be no pesky show to interfere with all the product placements.
