Emmy Awards 2010: The Liveblog

Emmy Awards 2010

It's that time of year again, when a comedian we like gambles their reputation on hosting a big, lavish gala in front of millions of viewers. Will Jimmy Fallon fall flat with his Tweet-based comedy? You be the judge, as we also be the judge in this, our Emmys liveblog! Zach Oat is starting things off, with Mindy Monez taking over at the halfway point.

8:00 - Great, the Glee-heavy comedy has started. The Glee kids can't afford to attend the Emmys, which causes a star-studded -- Tina Fey, Kate Gosselin, Jon Hamm, Bertty White, Jorge Garcia, Nina Dobrev (yes, the Emmys acknowledged The Vampire Diaries' existence), Joel McHale (ditto Community), Jane Lynch Tim Gunn -- music video to "Born to Run." Can't believe they got the rights from Springsteen. Jorge Garcia can sing! Tina Fey cannot. It segues into the live open, which is basically Fallon doing his best Boss, with guitar backup by Randy Jackson. I have to admit, it's freaky seeing Jon Hamm in a black shirt with a red pencil tie.

8:07 - I have no idea how Fallon got into a tux that fast. The magic of television! Uh-oh, the guitar is back, but luckily it's to sing a joke about Conan O'Brien. "NBC asked the Late Show host to come to LA and host a different show. What could go wrong?" Awesome. As if to make up for it, the Year in Comedy Montage seems very heavy on NBC shows.

8:11 - Jon Hamm and Betty White have flirtatious banter! Comedy! Chris Colfer, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Neil Patrick Harris, Eric Stonestreet, Jon Cryer and Ty Burrell are the nominees for the Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy, and Eric Stonestreet wins it! Holy cow! Granted, Modern Family had half of the nominees, so the odds were in their favor, but the fact that they didn't split the vote is amazing.

8:19 - Man, the Tweeted introductions aren't very funny. But Jim Parsons and Sofia Vergara are there to introduce the nominees for comedy writing, and after some jokes about Vergara's seductive accent, and how much Jim likes hearing her say "Big Bang," we see the writer's intro videos, which involve them answering a question that really doesn't matter, since they all goof around in response. Vergara's voice turns into a wall of vowels as she screams the results, because the writers for Modern Family win it. Good. They had the best video. Also, they deserved it.

8:23 - Stephen Colbert kills it. As always. He announces the Best Supporting Actresses in a comedy (Jane Lynch, Jenna Krakowski, Julie Bowen, Kristen Wiig, Sofia Vergara and Holland Taylor), and Lynch takes it. Kick. Ass. She correctly thanks the writers for creating the ridiculous Sue Sylvester, then thanks her wife and kids. I want to go into the future and meet Jane Lynch's kids in 20 years. I think they'll be pretty awesome.
