My husband Scott really didn't want to watch this episode. So I waited until he went to bed, and then cursed him for sleeping while I was burning the midnight oil. And after an arduous 20 minutes of watching and note-taking, I fell sound asleep on the couch. Thanks for the good night's rest, Rob.
While talking to him on her cell phone, Claire gets all up in Trevor's face about respecting her as a professional. She arrives home to discover her apartment was robbed, which is the last thing she says before she hangs up on him. So of course, Trevor rushes to the rescue -- which she doesn't need. The cops are with her and a locksmith is already working on her front door. Claire is her brusque self with Trevor, but when he decides to go, the locksmith drops a tool. The noise startles her, so Claire asks Trevor to stay and help her clean up her ransacked place. He gets inappropriate with her while helping to restore some order to her bedroom (which I imagine is never out of order), so she banishes him to the living room, where he meets the locksmith, Tommy Brown (Adam Kaufman).
Tommy's a former jewel thief who is in love with his parole officer, Paula Torres. It seems all the other media outlets are reporting the character's name is Paula Travato, but I actually watched the episode (after my false-start last night), and everyone says Torres. At any rate, she's played by Shirley Rumierk. Paula Whoever maybe returns Tommy's feelings, but isn't a moron, and makes it crystal clear she cannot trust him. Tommy's devastated.
Trevor tries this and that to get the couple together. It's co-conspiring with Paula's doorman, Charlie (Ed Wheeler) that does the trick. The duo arranges for Paula and Tommy to get stuck in her elevator, with only a basket of food, booze, and music (via an iPod and speakers Trevor "borrowed" from Felix) to keep them company. Once they're alone together with no outside distractions, Paula lets down her guard. Tommy ends up staying the night with her. The next morning at work, she learns he's been picked up by the cops. Several valuable diamonds were stolen from a museum at 3:00 AM and the heist fits Tommy's M.O. Since he was in Paula's bed at the time, she establishes herself as his alibi and loses her job. She then learns from her doorman that Tommy ran out for a few minutes around 3:00 AM. She decides Tommy just used her. He didn't. Sonya (Trieste Kelly Dunn), his ex-wife/ex-jewel-thieving-partner, did the job. Tommy tells Paula he almost joined his ex after Paula's first rejection, but once the two of them got together, he knew he didn't want to go back to his old life. He snuck out of her apartment in the middle of the night only to tell Sonya the job was off, and left with the impression that she wasn't going to steal the jewels. But since she did, Trevor and Tommy trick Sonya out of the diamonds, set her up for Paula to catch her in the act of recovering them, and then Tommy breaks into the museum to return them. And of course, he gets caught. Paula goes to see him at the local jail, kisses him and slips a handcuff key into his mouth. When he's being transported to the county lockup, he breaks free and the two of them go on the lam, together.
Meanwhile, Claire realizes she's getting too close to Trevor, and pulls back. Or maybe she realizes she's pulling back and gets close. It's hard to say because there's certainly nothing shown on screen to clarify it. LIKE, OH, SAY CHEMISTRY.

When I've had a satisfying experience with a show-runner's prior work, I try to give his or her new stuff at least three episodes to win me over. This is Cupid's fourth. And I can tell it's just not going to work between us. I would say it's time we said good-bye. I mean, we shared a very special hour together, and that's something I will always cherish. I'll never forget you guys, but I'm with you, Show, 'til the bitter end (either at ABC or TWoP) and then I'm pretty sure I will forget you. Damn. I prefer the graceful break-up. My husband Scott really, really, really didn't want to watch this episode, and he's usually happy to cater to my TV-watching whims. Since I didn't want to punish him, I waited until he went to bed, and then cursed him for sleeping while I was burning the (post)-midnight oil. And after an arduous 20 minutes of watching and note-taking, I fell sound asleep on the couch and didn't wake until my kids did, this morning. Thanks for the good night's rest, Rob. At least we'll always have that.
Nighttime In New York: Claire's got Trevor on the cell phone and is scolding him for slipping a mixtape in her bag. Trevor corrects that it's a mix CD, and I guess we're supposed to "enjoy" the "banter" or something. She tells him it's inappropriate for him to call her unless it's regarding his mental health. I wonder why she doesn't have an answering service like every other doctor in the world, but not as much as I wonder why he calls her at all. Whether or not he's Cupid (and therefore delusional) Cannavale's Trevor is fun, sweet, and adorable. Paulson's Claire is a cold fish. And you smell like one too. I know she's supposed to be. But there's nothing engaging about this Claire. When she's supposed to be vulnerable, it just comes across as needy. When she's supposed to be strong and rational, it comes off as snide and superior. I like Paulson. Heck, I even liked her in the ridiculous Studio 60, but her Claire leaves me wishing I could change the channel.
But well, let's get to the story, anyhow. Claire wants a clear picture of who Trevor is and where he came from in order to help him, so Trevor says, "I'm Cupid. I'm from Olympus." He then says he feels badly about how their sessions have been going and he hopes the CD will give her some insight into what's going on in his head. Claire's arrived at her apartment now. She notices the door is ajar, which would scare me to death -- particularly if I was a famous Love Shrink/author living in the Big Apple. But Claire has few feelings, at least none that we've seen, so she goes right in. The place has been ransacked. She says, "Oh my God. I've been robbed," and then hangs up.
